Basic Bodybuilding Concepts

There are various components that must work synergistically in order for a program of muscle building to work. The most obvious component is the workout.....the lifting of weights, utilization of exercise machines, cardivascular routines and the like. Proper amounts of sleep allowing the body and mind to rest and repair are of paramount importance also.

One of the most often mismanaged and overlooked components is diet. What you eat, when you eat, how much you eat. I once had a young guy at my gym complain to me that he was working out like a madman but could not gain any muscular weight. The first question I had for him was what do you generally eat during the course of a day ? He replied well I usually have a cup of coffee in the morning and then for lunch I hit Burger King....I immediately stopped him and said you mean you don't eat breakfast ? He said no I hate eating breakfast.

In my mind I'm thinking this poor guy had better save his gym membership money because he's wasting his time. I tried to explain to him the importance of thinking and eating like a bodybuilder if his goal was to build both muscular size and strength. He nodded and agreed with me.....and I never saw him in the gym again.

Food is life, food is pleasure and for a bodybuilder food is at the top of the list in importance to fuel muscular goals. It can be difficult to consume whole foods in enough quantities to support muscular growth. That's where supplements can make all the difference in the world. Protein powders provide the additional building blocks your muscles need to grow in conjunction with consuming quality protein foods like eggs, chicken, turkey, beef and fish.

Vitamins and minerals can supplement your intake of fruits and vegetables. Let's face it, how many of us get the required servings of fruits and vegetables each and every day. Eating properly takes thought and effort. Avoiding those foods which are not too healthy but oh so tasty takes willpower. You must always keep your goal of building strong, quality muscle and improving and maintaining your health first and foremost in your mind. Having strong goals helps in maintaining discipline and making the right food choices along the way.
